The Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, established by Alex Griffiths in 1947 as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary, is historically important in demonstrating the evolution of nature-based tourism in Queensland. It is the earliest surviving tourist attraction on the Gold Coast. It evolved from a site of local interest and public spectacle of lorikeet feeding to an internationally recognised nature-based tourism attraction. The Sanctuary is recognised locally and nationally for its social and aesthetic values as an iconic location that features a combination of animal habitats, reserves, and tourist elements. The place has special association with the life and work of Alex Griffiths and contains early structures of significance.
