The Wreck of the Coolangatta is one of the earliest recorded shipwrecks on the Gold Coast and was influential in the decision to name the nearby town ‘Coolangatta’. Examined in conjunction with other historical sources, the shipwreck has the potential to yield information that will contribute to a greater understanding of the design, form, materials and engineering features of mid 19th century schooners.
